The Congress-led UDF on Monday disrupted the Kerala Assembly session on Monday alleging police brutality to suppress Opposition protests against fuel cess and tax hikes proposed on the state budget.

Seeking leave of the House for an adjournment debate against police highhandedness against those who are protesting against the wrongdoings of the government, including the cess on fuel imposed in the budget for 2023-24, Congress member Shafi Parambil compared Chief Minister Vijayan with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He said both leaders hold fascist views that the dissenters are terrorists or urban naxals.

He highlighted the police brutality against a student activist who unfurled black flag at the chief minister’s motorcade in Kochi He also draw the attention of the House on the preventive arrests of UDF workers, wherever the chief minister is having programmes.

Responding to the adjournment motion, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said the Opposition’s anti-government protests are not getting public support. The Opposition parties cannot convince even their cadres to participate in large numbers in protests against the government.

As Chief Minister Vijayan, in his reply, failed to give any assurance that he would take action against police officers who manhandled UDF workers, the UDF members rushed to the base of the Speaker’s dias  and made it impossible for him to conduct the business.

Speaker AN Shamseer then asked ministers to table their answers to the submissions moved by the members and passed bills without any discussion and adjourned the House for the day.
